Wine of the Month......... SIMI Summertime Sipper
One of the most popular wines of the summer is Sauvignon Blanc. It's clean, crisp, refreshing and pairs perfectly with lighter foods. Simi Sauvignon Blanc grapes are from some outstanding vineyards in SonomaCounty that come from different climates. The warmer climates produce tropical fruit and melon flavors; and the cooler climates produce grass, lime and mineral characteristics. Simi Sauvignon Blanc is delicious with summer fare such as salad, fish, and chicken or as an aperitif. Perfect on its own while visiting with friends on the patio. For the month of July it is on sale at Heinens for $9.99 regularly $14.99.

Tamara and Pat | I totally love the Oral B Electric toothbrush. Brushing time has been extended, even though it doesn't seem like it, but enjoy seeing the little smiley face on the monitor when time has been reached. Wishing you and your staff a very happy and safe 4th, Enjoy :-)"

Ask the Dentist.....

Q: Is it true that sports drinks are not as bad for my teeth as soda pop?
A: The problem with soda pop is the level of acidity or low pH. The pH of one's mouth is normally between 6.2 and 7.0. When the pH of the tooth enamel drops below 5.5, the demineralization or erosion begins. Below is a pH comparison of some of the most popular sodas and sports drinks.
Barq's pH 4.61
Diet Coke pH 3.39
Pepsi pH 2.49
Sprite pH 3.42
Dr. Pepper pH 2.92
Gatorade pH 2.95
Vit. H2O pH 3.02
As you can see, the answer is "NO". Sports drinks are generally as acidic as soda pop and are therefore ravage your teeth's enamel! |

Dear Kurt,
Welcome to our JULY issue of our monthly lifestyle Ezine or 'electronic magazine'. This month's feature article is entitled:

100 DAYS OF GETTING FIT!
In our last Ezine, I professed my Diary of A Fat Man story, and my desire to get healthy. I took on a 100 day Get Fit challenge and asked for two of our patients to join me, totally free, on this fitness journey. The challenge involved dietary changes and working with personal trainer Craig Cassell NCSF, CPT at The Powerhouse Gym. I looked for 2 people who wanted to get fit in 100 days and feel better. Success will equal completion of the 100 day program and reaching our individual goals we established with the trainer. The two winners, Ann and Laurie, entered this terrific fitness giveaway by writing to us and explaining why they wanted to trade in their old bodies for new fit ones and do so totally free!
So here we go, full throttle. As we begin this adventure with a full range of emotions we will move forward with determination. I hope we make great strides, and have a little fun along the way. Wish us luck!
We promised to chronicle our 100 DAYS OF GETTING FIT and to get started Craig wrote about each of us and our initial evaluations below:
Ann's initial evaluation: The timing couldn't be better for Ann as she paves two new paths in life. Professionally, Ann begins a new job just about the same time we begin our health & fitness journey. My long term goal for Ann is to make drastic physical and lifestyle changes that will improve certain aspects in her life needed to be a great employee and an overall better person. She will be under review in 90 days with her employer and I believe she will shine as we improve her energy levels, cardiovascular health, endurance, strength, and confidence!
Laurie's initial evaluation: Laurie's story was very touching for me and I can see why it was a no-brainer to select her as one of the two contestants for this challenge. Her biggest undertaking in life is caring for her husband, who has had Multiple Sclerosis for many years now. As a sports medicine student, I am very familiar with the unfortunate symptoms of this disease and how debilitating it can be to one's lifestyle and activity.
'MS', as it is most commonly referred, is an autoimmune disease in which the body's own immune system attacks the protective sheath that serves as a covering for your nerves. This process interferes with the brain's ability to communicate with the rest of the body, which most noticeably, impairs muscular function and control. The most important goal for Laurie is strengthening the muscles needed for transporting her husband to and from his wheelchair. Herback, legs, and core muscles must be strengthened and taught how to function properly when lifting an external load. In doing so, the added strength will help avoid muscular imbalances and the possibility of injuries. Also, it is extremely important for Laurie to be able to devote an hour or so to herself as a way to relieve stress and unwind from the steadfast caring for a loved one.
Dr. Thomas' initial evaluation: Dr. Thomas' prime focus will be to lose weight and strengthen the muscles necessary to alleviate shoulder, back, and knee pain. Like many of us, Dr. Thomas is in a seated position for the majority of the day which, over time, can lead to lack of flexibility and major joint problems. As we strengthen these underused muscles, we will begin to increase metabolism and lower body fat percentage. Coupled with resistance training, we will use cardio as a means to improve lung and heart health and burn fat. In just a couple short weeks, at two sessions a week, we should see major improvements in posture, knee discomfort, stamina, and muscular endurance!
We will chronicle our progress, without divulging specific details, in subsequent Ezines.

Vicki, we're glad you're back.......
Vicki Keefer, Dental Assistant | Many of you read Vicki's beautifully written article entitled "Missing My Dad" from our April EZine issue. We received multitudes of comments, emails, letters, and calls responding to her touching and heartfelt story of caring for her aging father, Thurman Carl Mollohan.
Shortly after the release of the April issue, Vicki had emergency surgery to remove a benign growth on her spinal cord. While recovering from her surgery, her daughter delivered a healthy baby boy 9 weeks prematurely. With the joy of such a miracle, soon came the passing of Vicki's father. "Life certainly comes with its ups and downs, doesn't it?" Vicki is so happy to be back to work now and is looking forward to seeing all of you soon and sharing her grandbaby pictures! |
We are listening...
"I love my teeth! I used to se so self-conscious about smiling because my teeth were so discolored to me. I had acid-reflux growing up and the medicine was very hard on my teeth. I had wanted to whiten my teeth for a while, but was told other whitening systems may not work on my teeth. My family surprised me with the KOR Whitening Sytem and it was very easy for me to do at home. There was really no pain during the process and I saw results within two days. Thank you so much to Dr. Thomas and his amazing staff. I now love my teeth and am not afraid to smile!"
Sincerely,
Bayley H., 16 yrs. old |

Giving Back........

June 30th concluded our annual Smiles for Life Campaign to equally benefit The Bridge Avenue School and The Garth Brooks Children's Foundation. W e are so very blessed and pleased to announce the overwhelming response to this year's campaign.
Through whitening many of our patient's smiles, we raised $5,100 and will soon be presenting Dan McElwain with the funds to kick off a new capital campaign for The Bridge Avenue School. A sincere "thank you" to all who helped us help them, so children can smile for life.
The Bridge Avenue School is a Christian middle school on the near west side of Cleveland serving previously unsuccessful students. Students at The Bridge Avenue School perform years below grade level upon enrollment and consistently make years of academic recovery each school year. Students work through the Wilson Language System in many cases learning to read for the first time. Math curriculum is individualized and an army of volunteers provides regular one-on-one tutoring. Students arrive at The Bridge Avenue School unable to succeed in school at any level either because of academic or personal behavior and leave able to succeed in high school. For more information or volunteer please check www.thebridgeavenueschool.com or call Dan McElwain at 216-965-8426.
