Pair The "Wine of the Month" with Terrific Grilling Ideas for Late Summer........
.
Consider grilling root vegetables like cut-up beets, yams, turnips, carrots, and parsnips coated in extra-virgin olive oil and seasoned with minced fresh rosemary, garlic, sea salt, and freshly ground pepper.  Cover an old baking sheet with foil to keep your vegetables from falling through the grill grates.

And grill your dessert, too!  Halve fresh peaches, brush with melted butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar.  Place them face down on a hot and greased grill pan until caramelized, juicy, and tender.  The grill pan will insure that the juices are conserved to create your own sauce to serve over low-fat vanilla ice cream.  Yummy!!!

Dear Kurt,

Welcome to our AUGUST issue of our monthly lifestyle Ezine or 'electronic magazine'.  This month's feature article is entitled

              "Open Up!"

I have kindly been asking this of my patients for 26 years now.  Little did I know, this is exactly what would be asked of ME during this 100 DAY FITNESS CHALLENGE.  As Ann, Laurie, and I have reached the halfway point of our fitness promenade, it is WE that have been opening up.  Opening up our minds and bodies to the very new idea of healthy eating and fitness in our everyday lives.  Afterall, I don't like working out.  I have great anxiety each and every training session over what my body is capable of accomplishing.  But, somehow I persevere.  Feelings of exhaustion when finished quickly lead to happiness, a sense of accomplishment, and much restored energy!  I am receptive to this new innervation.  I still haven't warmed up to the idea of Yoga practice, but who knows what other laughable experiences my hygienist Tamara will eventually talk me in to.  To date, I've lost 17 lbs. and 1 1/2 inches off my waist.  I will continue on, Wooohoo!!!
Enough of me, listen to what Laurie and Ann had to say about their first 45 days........

Ann:    "Well... I hate it and I love it at the same time!  Know what I mean???!!!!!!  I have never ached so much in my life yet I seem to have lots more energy most of the time.  I often don't want to go to the gym because I'm going to be struggling to move muscles I don't even know I have, I'll be a sweaty mess; I'll be making strange, ugly sounds and weird facial expressions; I think I am going to die before its over; I'll look like a complete fool; and I know Craig is going to beat me up!  BUT I go.  AND I feel like I can conquer the world when I leave ... well almost ...after I catch my breath and swallow tons of water and pour a good bit over my face, neck and back!
I have really bad knees and that was my biggest concern at the start.  It limits what I can do but it hasn't stopped Craig from adapting the routines to accommodate this "limitation".  He's always concerned for safety and I really do trust him.  I wouldn't be making the progress I'm making without him - no doubt about that.  Balance, strength and stamina are improving!! Yippie!!"

Laurie:  "I can't believe what I have been able to accomplish at the gym.  I initially had so much anxiety about my ability to participate in this challenge.  But, here we are, half way finished.  Although I still feel nervous when Craig instructs me on new exercises, I somehow make my way through them.  I'm feeling new muscles every day and I am excited that there is 6 weeks left for even more progress."

We promised to chronicle our 100 DAYS OF GETTING FIT and after our first half, Craig wrote about each of us and our progress below:

Ann:  Ann has made tremendous, almost miraculous, improvements in her lower body range of motion! When we initially began, it was very strenuous for her to bend her knees even 10-20 degrees, however, in less than 2 months Ann can now perform a full, modified parallel squat with little pain! This kind of change has the power to improve her well-being for years to come!  Also, we have reduced body fat, steadily increased energy and endurance levels, and have made strides in making simple, attainable improvements with nutrition.

Laurie: My main concern with Laurie was increasing overall muscular strength and endurance while focusing on the corrective work needed to relax and stretch her overactive muscles (right side) and strengthen her underactive muscles (left side). I am extremely pleased with her progress! Just looking at her it is evident that her posture is greatly improved from the day we began. Laurie also described for me how she now uses her whole body to help her husband to and from his wheelchair and for the very first time managed to pick him up off the couch without any assistance! This will undoubtedly help Laurie avoid any type of back injury or muscle strains when caring for her loved one.

Dr. Thomas: Dr. Thomas' progress to date is easily seen in his overall body composition.  Just look at him, he's standing way more upright!  To my excitement and Dr. Thomas' disbelief, the gap was shortened on our immediate goal of reducing knee pain. It took only two weeks!  I focused on improving flexibility in the hips and using muscular tension to reduce inflammation. Due to the positions he assumes on a daily basis at work, we needed to strengthen the muscles responsible for supporting proper spinal and pelvic position.  His hip/torso range of motion has improved and therefore helped the hamstrings pull the pelvis into better alignment.  No more excessive compression on the knee joint!  Additionally, he's made improvements in cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and overall endurance. This puts us right on pace for reaching our goals and, most importantly, maintaining a healthy lifestyle/body for life.

**   Also, the Powerhouse Gym would like to announce that the winner of this fitness challenge will win an additional 100 day all access pass to the gym.  Even more incentive to push forward!  Good Luck!!

Fireworks in the air for Dr. Thomas' family...........

Kyle and Yeon's Engagement
Vicki Keefer

In July, Dr. Thomas took his summer vacation with family in Upper Michigan.  It was almost like a family renuion, encompassing three generations in all.  They had a relaxing time of enjoying everyone's company while taking in all of nature's outdoor adventures.  The 4th of July, however, brought about it's own personal "Fireworks" for Dr. Thomas, with the engagement of his son, Kyle to his girlfriend of over three years.  It was a huge surprise to all and lots to celebrate!

"I've spent my life hiding my smile, embarrassed about my teeth and dreading dental visits.  My wife convinced me to see Dr. Thomas for regular dental cleanings, telling me how great Dr. Thomas and his staff were.  A few regular cleanings later and, after getting to know Dr. Thomas, I talked to him about possibly fixing my teeth.  His enthusiasm was catching and I made the decision to go for it.

We decided to start with my top teeth and, after a few appointments, I am now the proud owner of a beautiful, new, natural smile!  My new teeth are awesome and I am smiling away without a need to hide anymore.  Now, I can't wait to get the bottom teeth fixed.  A huge smiling Thank You to Dr. Thomas and his fantastic staff for a great experience!"

Sincerely,
Matt L.
