Airplane 4

Every parent wants their child to have direction-a purpose in life that drives them to be their best.  For my younger son, that "a-ah"moment came

after completing his first 2 years at UK as a business major and then becoming enamoured with, then thrilled with, and now impassioned with airplanes and flight.

Kasey is a very personable young man with a warm smile.  He always could talk to anyone and enjoyed being around people.  In high school, he really didn't see the meaning of education and learning.  It wasn't until recently that the "lights went on" and it started to click for him.  It was almost like he said to himself, "It's time to grow up and be responsible for yourself!".  He's really grown up in a multitude of ways and now assumes responsiblility for a variety of things, which previously received only cursory attention.  He recently transferred to

Eastern Kentucky University to earn a  Professional Flight Degree and now everything involves airplanes , whether they be real or recreational remote control planes-he is passionate about all of it!  He devours his classroom work now and wants even more-so eager to excel!  He reviews yesterday's assignments to be sure he knows it today---Pretty exciting stuff, if you ask me!! Vicki Keefer I'm not sure why he's "flying so high" both literally and figuratively, but I guess being passionateabout what you want can do that for you. Everybody finds their niche sooner or later and I am so grateful to see him so excited about his direction in life. This weekend I will be visiting him as he prepares to complete his first solo flight. I can't wait!

 Vicki Keefer

Dear Kurt,

Welcome to our APRIL issue of our monthly lifestyle ezine or "electronic magazine".

Our feature article this month is entitled "Missing My Dad" , written by our Dental Assistant ,Vicki Keefer.

Vicki KeeferLast year, I made the commitment to care for my aging father in my home 7 days a week and 24 hours a day.   After several falls, injuries, and acts of confusion, I decided that he could no longer live independently and we mutually agreed that he would move in with my husband and me.

When you first begin to notice your parent is aging, it's very emotional to think that the person who took care of you all these years now needs your help.  At first, it's just simple things like running errands or taking them to the doctor's office.  Then it becomes more.  You find yourself making decisions for them that they used to make in an instant.  You need someone to cook for them, clean up after them, or just check up on them.   You notice driving is no longer safe for them or for innocent people on the road.  You know in your heart that you need to take away their driver's license, but they fight it so hard, as it represents their independence; one of the last things that represents their freedom.  When that decision is finally made, you become responsible for taking them everywhere-YOU lose your independence, as well.

It's very traumatic when it comes down to making a choice of living arrangements.  There are so many difficult choices to make.  "Should they live with me or in an assisted living facility?"  Having that conversation with my dad in one of his more lucid moments was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do.  For the first time I saw fear in my dad's eyes; fear of being a burden, fear of ill health, fear of losing his bearings, and ultimately-fear of his own mortality.  I chose to keep my father close to me and have him live with us.

I anticipated there would be tough times and good times and lo and behold, I was right.  Things start off easy enough .You think, "I can do this!"  As their health declines, it gets harder and harder to maintain your attitude, your job, and your own health.  Eventually, you begin losing all your freedom.  Organization becomes second nature.  Hiring caregivers while you're away is mandatory.  Getting up at all hours of the night, just like you would for a newborn , becomes the "norm".  You try very hard not to lose your temper, but exhaustion mixed with a feeling of being overwhelmed sometimes takes its toll.  When you are responsible for bathing them, shaving them, dressing them, as well as trying to keep them safe, it is difficult to say the least and I can't begin to explain how hard it is to watch helplessly as you see them slipping.

All I can say is that some days are great and some are not.  I am strengthened and encouraged by the multitudes of our patients who are on this same journey and have shared their experiences with me.  My emotions are raw-laughing one minute and crying the next.  Most of all I cry...a lot!  I know that one day all I will have are my memories.  Right now when my dad fades in, I am grateful for our time together....and when he fades out, I find myself....missing my dad.

Thank you, Vicki, for sharing your heartfelt and touching story.  So many people have asked of Vicki's whereabouts.  I thought we would give you an update.  Vicki had emergency surgery on March 26th after suffering severe pain in her arm and shoulder.   While the original pain is much better after the surgery, she still faces several weeks of difficult and painful rehabilitation.  We anticipate, based on her doctor's advice, she will be out of the office 4-6 weeks during her recovery.  She asked me to thank everyone for your prayers, calls, cards, and best wishes.  Hurry back Vic-We Miss You!

Much gratitude,

Kurt Thomas, D.D.S.

"I feel so thankful that I was referred to your practice.  I was not looking forward to my necessary crown work, however, I was so pleasantly surprised by how well the entire procedure went, even your injections are Painless!!  My crowns look so much nicer than my old large silver fillings.

I'm so thankful you and your staff told me about bleaching that I could finish at home, on my own time.  Tamara explained the procedure step by step.  It was easy to use and there was no sensitivity.  Every morning my smile became brighter.  The result?  One very happy patient with a confident smile.  I am blessed to have found the BEST DENTIST!!,

Appreciatively, Mary F.

Continuing Education.......Dr Heygi Recently, I attended a symposium at Thommen Medical's company headquarters in downtown Cleveland.  The topic concerned restoring-to-health the broken down or worn dentition.  Cases of this nature can be extremely difficult to treat and can consume my "paperwork  Fridays" planning them and consulting with other doctors and surgeons who may need to be involved.  Twenty doctors attended and discussed techniques related to phasing treatment for       these very difficult cases.
Giving Back

smiles for lifeWatching March Madness the other night, (one of my passions), I was struck by how much effort the players exert and how hard they try.  I started thinking about the reasons they put forth so much effort.   I'm sure some play for the love of the game and some play because they  have a competitive fire that burns within.  I also imagined that some compete so diligently because they are looking to move to the next level, NBA,to escape an impoverished or poor home environment. That led me to ruminate about the kids at The Bridge Avenue School (TBAS), Dan, and his staff.  Isn't that what they are trying to offer these kids who will never be NBA stars?  ...a way out...a way to care for themselves and their families...a way to know the joy of accomplishment!

What great things they are achieving at TBAS!  They teach kids to be the "stars" of their own familes!  Recently I sat down with one of the sudents at TBAS who shared with me his desire to become involved with law enforcement.  His eyes lit up when he relayed to me how "cool it would be to arrest bad guys doing bad things".  He told me with a smile on his face that he has chosen a better path than the others in his family.  That is why we want so badly to help TBAS!  We want more success stories like this one.  Please help us to raise money through the Smiles for Life Campaign to benefit The Bridge Avenue School and The Garth Brooks Children's Foundation.

Vicki Keefer

In order to benefit The Garth Brooks Foundation and The Bridge Avenue School, we have reduced the cost of teeth whitening by $150 and ALL of the proceeds go to the aforementioned charities.  This offer is in effect from March 1, 2010 until June 30, 2010.  Don't miss this tremendous opportunity to have beautiful white teeth AND benefit fantastic children's charities!

Ask the Dentist

question1

Q: I recently went to my primary care doctor complaining of fullness and ringing in my ear, as well as frequent headaches.  He couldn't find anything wrong and sent me to my ENT, who also couldn't find anything. He suggested I see my dentist. What gives?

A: Doctors and ENT's are increasingly becoming aware of the definitive link between teeth (or a patient's bite) and headaches, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and facial muscle fatigue.  The use of special dental apppliances called "Data Appliances" have been used for many of our patients to reduce headaches, and in many cases eliminate those previously treated with medication only.  We have seen dramatic decreases in muscle pain in/and around the face, as well as the feeling of fullness of the ears.  Other symptoms that can have dental origins are clicking/popping of the temporomandibular joint, as well as dizziness or head and neck pain.  If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please ask us, as we may be able to help.
